Peregrines in Northern Ireland
Rathlin Island: public trails, seasonal visitor facilities and peregrine habitat.
Rathlin Island, County Antrim
The RSPB's published Rathlin walking-trails guide includes peregrines among the island's wildlife. Start with the Rathlin Island reserve page for the current visitor information and downloadable trail material.
Plan this as an island wildlife trip, with a chance of a peregrine rather than a promised encounter. Use designated public routes and keep well clear of cliff edges. We do not give nest positions or suggest leaving a path to look for one.
Check the season before booking
The West Light Seabird Centre has a seasonal opening period. At our October 2026 source check, the RSPB said its 2026 season had ended and reopening was planned for spring 2027. Check the current notice before travelling; an island visit and entry to the centre are separate arrangements.
Confirm ferry availability, the return journey, onward transport and the access requirements of your chosen route. Poor weather can affect an island itinerary. Do not assume the viewing platform and visitor centre have identical accessibility.
While you wait
Use the cheat sheet to compare a passing bird's shape with your notes. If you want a close view of peregrine nesting behaviour, an official camera is a more predictable starting point than searching the cliffs.
